In the clinical setting, questions of medical ethics raise a host of perplexing problems, often complicated by conflicting perspectives and the need to make immediate decisions. In this volume, bioethicists and physicians provide a nuanced, in-depth approach to the difficult issues involved in bioethics consultation. Addressing the needs of researchers, clinicians, and other health professionals on the front lines of bioethics practice, the contributors focus primarily on practical concerns-whether ethics consultation is best done by individuals, teams, or committees; how an ethics consult service should be structured; the need for institutional support; and techniques and programs for educating and training staff-without neglecting more theoretical considerations, such as the importance of character or the viability of organizational ethics. Isabelle Stengers focust in haar diepzinnige wetenschapstheoretische reflectie allereerst op de theoretische en experimentele natuurwetenschappen en vervolgens op de humane wetenschappen, en maakt de maatschappelijke en politieke implicaties ervan duidelijk. Stengers wijst er namelijk op dat de wetenschappen op een ondemocratische wijze als strategische elementen worden gebruikt door moderne machten : over anderen wordt beslist zonder hun inspraak en zonder rekening te houden met hun ervaring. Stengers kant zich tegen dit abusieve gebruik van de wetenschap en pleit voor een verruimd weten, een 'scientia' waarin de betrokkenen - de burgers - medezeggenschap hebben. Gilbert Hottois legt zijn filosofische vooronderstellingen bloot ten aanzien van de wetenschap en in het bijzonder ten aanzien van de techno-wetenschap. Cet ouvrage présente les fondements philosophiques et scientifiques du développement actuel des biotechnologies. Ce développement se fonde, philosophiquement, sur l'idée de la réalisation du possible largement commentée dans la tradition philosophique. Il est montré en outre comment le bricolage biotechnologique résulte de propriétés nouvellement reconnues de l'évolution biologique elle-même, qui procède selon le principe du bricolage moléculaire exposé par François Jacob. L'intimité des relations entre biotechnologie et évolution biologique, qui reste mal comprise en général, est ici détaillée à un niveau fondamental, celui de la biologique moléculaire des trente dernières années et des techniques comme l'ADN recombinant et plus récemment l'évolution dirigée et les diverses formes de clonage. Les questions d'éthique et de politique scientifique liées aux biotechnologies sont également examinées. Les réflexions sur le thème biologie et société et la responsabilité scientifique exprimées depuis une trentaine d'années sont présentées en même temps que les divers cadres et actions politiques et institutionnels des biotechnologies. L'ouvrage, qui insiste sur l'extraordinaire malléabilité des structures biologiques, est aussi bien un plaidoyer pour l'exploration maîtrisée des possibles qu'un argumentaire pour une anthropologie philosophique de l'action humaine
